The reason people Join
In many cases, people aged between 17-30 have simply lost touch with their old social circles
due to education and career advancement, or their friends are leaving for University or Colleges. Whatever the reason, Rotaract
offers an instant social scene where new members can meet people of similar age.
Rotaract gives members the opportunity to help charities and the local community by merely
turning up to social events or, more actively organising fund raising events.
One major advantage of Rotaract is its sheer size. If members move due to new career opportunities,
etc., they already have a good social circle to join and therefore settle-in their new location in a matter of weeks rather
than months.
The Benefits
Rotaract members, Rotaractors, are introduced to structured meetings where they can express
their ideas/views and offer support for planned events. Normally this exposure gives members self confidence, a more positive
outlook towards their abilities, and a sense of achievement when their ideas help make a social event and/or help a local
charity.
If a Rotaractor feels they would like to have more influence and responsibility by filling
a position within their club (its entirely their decision), guidance will be given, then it is up to them to motivate, support,
and gain constructive results.
From a personal skill point of view, each member gains valuable experience in team building,
delegation, control, responsibility, fund-raising, reliability, communication, and so on.
It is not surprising Rotaractors begin to use their skills within their own working environment,
the organisation involved has therefore gained valuable skills without any cost to themselves. These skills would have been
tried, tested and important lessons learnt outside the working environment.
One peculiarity of Rotaract, is its ability to give people confidence (more than they would
normally exercise). For example, to stand up in a room of 100+ people and plug a club event. This is due to everyone being
in the same boat, so if/or when mishaps do happen, there is always lots of help and encouragement.
The one thing Rotaract is all about and the one thing that what we must never forget is that Rotaract
is something we do in our spare time and as such it must always, always be FUN.
